Recovery Guide
Understanding the recovery process is crucial for optimal results. Here's what to expect after your gynecomastia surgery.
Recovery Timeline
Immediate Recovery
Rest is key. You'll wear a compression vest and may experience some soreness, swelling, and bruising. Pain is typically manageable with prescribed medication.
Returning to Routine
Most patients return to work (desk jobs) and light daily activities. You can shower 48 hours after surgery. Continue wearing the compression vest 24/7.
Increasing Activity
Swelling begins to subside. You can start light cardio (walking, stationary bike). Avoid heavy lifting or chest exercises.
Back to Normal
You can resume most exercises, including weightlifting, gradually. Compression vest usage may be reduced to 12 hours/day or stopped, depending on healing.
Final Results
Residual swelling resolves, and the final contour of your chest becomes visible. Scars continue to fade over the next year.
Key Instructions
Compression
Wearing your compression garment is non-negotiable. It minimizes swelling, supports the healing tissues, and helps the skin retract smoothly.
Massage
Starting around week 3, daily massage helps break down scar tissue and soften the treated area. We'll provide specific techniques.
Restrictions
Avoid raising your heart rate significantly for the first 2 weeks. No heavy lifting or chest-focused exercises for 4 weeks.
Recovery FAQs
How much pain will I be in?
Most patients describe the feeling as soreness, similar to an intense chest workout, rather than sharp pain. Prescription medication is provided but many patients switch to Tylenol within a few days.
When can I drive?
You can drive once you are no longer taking prescription pain medication and can comfortably wear a seatbelt and move your arms freely (usually 3-5 days).
Will I have drains?
Dr. Vali's technique typically does NOT require surgical drains, which makes recovery much more comfortable and convenient for patients.
